The JD.com Inc. headquarters during a ceremony marking company's 20th anniversary and 618 shopping event in Beijing, China, on Sunday, June 18, 2023. The 618 shopping festival, a key barometer of consumption in the country, has seen growing competition by e-commerce sites and retailing brands to offer discounts. One statement, issued by 10 publishing houses in Beijing, said the boycott was a necessary move to “maintain the stability and prosperity” of the book publishing market. Even major state-owned publishing companies voiced opposition to “chaotic” price wars.

Back in September, Scarlett Johansson, who played the hauntingly complex AI assistant in the 2013 Spike Jonze film “Her,” got a request from OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman. He wanted to hire Johansson to voice his company’s newest ChatGPT model, “Sky.” She said no. Johansson quickly lawyered up, saying Monday she was “shocked, angered and in disbelief” that Altman would use a voice “so eerily similar” to her own. OpenAI was forced to confront some of those concerns late last week, after two prominent employees left the company. “Being friends with AI will be so much easier than forging bonds with human beings,” wrote Wired editor Brian Barrett in a recent essay about the movie.

Russia’s relentless onslaught has a key goal: If they take Lyptsi, then they can position artillery within range of Ukraine’s second city, Kharkiv, 20 minutes down the road. “They’re not sending just anyone into the assaults.”His stare lengthens when asked about what fortifications were in place before the surprise Russian attack. At one position closer to the Russian border, the 92nd Assault Brigade showed CNN a Russian artillery gun, captured in the first days of the war, from which they are now firing French mortar shells. The gun was partially hidden by a wire net, aimed at providing some protection from an attack drone. Attacks persisted in the distance however, keeping the city’s residents awake through violently loud nights, now amplified by the threat of Russian artillery edging closer.

The Notting Hill of the 1990s was still socially heterodox and shabby chic, a neighborhood where a group of 30-something professionals could plausibly have ended up. Even in the late 1990s, such access to disposable income marked the characters in “Notting Hill” out as privileged. Yet, in the 1990s, Notting Hill, long a center of Caribbean immigrant culture and the site of the annual Notting Hill Carnival, underwent a rapid process of gentrification. Nvidia's Hopper chips include the H100, which was announced in 2022 and faced severe supply shortages last year as the AI gold rush intensified. Tuesday's AWS news represents a pushout in demand for Nvidia chips, not a loss of it. That would be the so-called "digestion" phase for AI chips that Wall Street has been speculating about since last year. If anything, AWS deciding to wait for the more-powerful Blackwell chips could mean the digestion phase is further out on the horizon than initially thought. Unlike last year, when Nvidia's chips were in such short supply, there are now rival chips out there, such as AMD's MI300X, which is angling for a corner of the inferencing market .

Nearly one-third of those people, who were followed for an average of 12 years, said they regularly used fish oil supplements. Over-the-counter fish oil suffers from a lack of purity and consistency, as well as the potential contaminants and heavy metals such as mercury that come with fish, Freeman said. “In addition, studies over the last 10 years have not been very positive for over-the-counter fish oil,” he added. “Fish oil was either having no benefit or in some cases it may harm, such as with stroke and AFib.

Target on Wednesday posted a year-over-year sales decline and missed Wall Street's earnings estimates, as consumers fatigued from high prices bought both fewer discretionary items and groceries. On a call with reporters, CEO Brian Cornell said the company's results reflect "continued soft trends in discretionary categories." Target also announced Monday it was cutting prices on thousands of everyday items, including milk, bread, paper towels and diapers. Like other retailers, Target has tried to win over consumers who are not spending as freely on clothing, home goods or other discretionary items. Walmart, for example, has gained market share from higher-income shoppers and recently introduced a premium food brand with most items under $5.

This old technology getting some fresh attention is a trend investors may not want to miss: Heat pumps. Heat pumps provide both air conditioning and heat — all in one device. Heat pumps could play a viable role in this regard," Muhedini said in a research note last week. The DOE also runs a Residential Cold Climate Heat Pump Technology Challenge , which is partnered with Trane, Carrier, and Johnson Controls, among other leading heat pump makers. In the chemicals sector, companies that produce more eco-friendly refrigerants for heat pumps could one day reap the benefits of recent legislation in the U.S. that will ban next year the production of heat pumps that use refrigerants with high levels of global warming potential.

Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesLONDON — U.K. inflation could be about to hit a major milestone, with some forecasting that a sharp fall in the April print will take the headline rate below the Bank of England's 2% target. That would represent a plunge from the current level of 3.2% and could "make or break" a June interest rate cut, economists say. Ashley Webb, U.K. economist at Capital Economics, said that if the headline rate does fall below 2% in April, as he expects, it would be "momentous." "This will be crucial in determining whether the first interest rate cut from 5.25% will happen in June (as we expect) or in August. We think inflation will fall further, perhaps even to 1.0% later this year," Webb said in a Friday note.

Disney's streaming overview Disney+ is its flagship streaming service across the globe. Dollar steady; ether fuels crypto rally
  + stars: | 2024-05-21 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
Cryptocurrencies rallied, led by a surge in ether on growing anticipation of an impending approval of spot ether exchange-traded funds (ETFs) by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Against the yen , the dollar rose 0.07% to 156.37 in the early Asian session. However, the still-stark interest rate differentials between the U.S. and Japan maintained the appeal of the yen as a funding currency. Still, the cautious Fed rhetoric has so far done little to significantly alter the market pricing for rate cuts, with investors betting on two cuts this year beginning September. Analysts said the latest crypto rally came on the back of speculation that an approval of spot ether ETFs by the U.S. SEC could be imminent, following in the footsteps of the listing of bitcoin ETFs earlier this year.
